Melodic Mischief

The difference between the 'rock' of today and those of the days of yore is that back then it was a produce emerging from and feeding on the masses' abstract sense of disaffection - knowing something is wrong but not knowing what the hell it is. These days, it is little more than an expression of self-significance DESPITE disaffection and bodes ill for the progression of rockers to relatively well-articulated social activists and philosophers. At its generic level, 'rock' feeds and feeds on our generic vibrance and passion. How it is utilised - be it an open-eyed scrutiny of the system we are interned in or ourselves, or a simple and apathetic expression of self-significance - is another matter.

I suppose Marx, Jesus, MalcomX, Gandhi, amongst others, can be considered a higher class of 'rockers' who had moved on from abstract disaffection to a relatively better articulated one that provides us the blueprint for getting out of the mess we are swilling in.

Just a thought.
I agree. The overall purpose of rock from the old days to now has changed in focus in so many ways, giving way to the "emo" and "alternative" rock with which we are now being engulfed. Rock will always feed into the sentiments of rebellion against the establishment, not conforming to the wrongs of society, and railing against all things unjust. I like that you would categorize those people as rockers. I always thought Jesus was pretty rock and roll, myself ;)
[this is good]
Sleeping Awake is one of my favorite songs EVER! I bought The Matrix Reloaded soundtrack without realizing that song was on there. Talk about a pleasant surprise!
